Upcoming Exhibition

Miss Plant dreams of owning a lake, an island – of golden mountain ridges rising along the shore, and fruit trees swaying in the breeze.
Each day she receives visitors whose words fall short of they mean.
At dusk, she lights an undying lamp on the spiral-patterned table
Tomorrow follows tomorrow; people come and go.
Tomorrow is cold and whispering, a bitter moon hanging over the Gobi.

Vanguard Gallery is pleased to present “Tomorrow Nevermore”, a solo project by Tang Chao, opening on 17 January. Departing from his previous solo exhibitions, this presentation focuses on a new series of drawings spanning watercolor, oil, pastel, and pencil. While the materials vary, the works continue Tang’s longstanding engagement with cinematic thinking and his exploration of sensory perception.
At first glance, the series unfolds through a palette of gentle hues and seemingly spontaneous brushstrokes, evoking a fairy-tale-like atmosphere. The “Green Princess” in the exhibition gestures simultaneously toward the plant and the story’s protagonist. Summer forest paths, rippling lakes, the dazzling lights of weekend dances, and warm sunlight filtering through windows are quietly juxtaposed on the wall. Lines in the drawings, at times slow, at others swift, trace trajectories of movement, leaving time and narrative within the images suspended in a delicate, oscillating state.
“Tomorrow Nevermore” will be presented at Vanguard Gallery’s project space, also located at B1–8, Lane 9, Qufu Road, Jing’an District, with the opening reception starting at 4 PM on 17 January.
